1. Guess Lecture on “Cervical and Breast Cancer”

In 2008, breast cancer caused 458,503 deaths worldwide and death by cervical cancer is also increasing. There are lot of questions, confusions and lack of awareness in the mind of girls students. What are the symptoms of cervical cancer? Whether it can be prevented? How to diagnose it? Is there any surgery? To clear all these doubts and to create awareness among the girls students, guess lecture on “Cervical and Breast Cancer” was organized on 24th Aug 2011.

Dr. Navneet Desai, Gynecologist, from Shobhana Hospital, Bhayander was called as a guest speaker who gave valuable guidance and knowledge to our girl students. The idea behind this event was to create awareness among the girls regarding the topic which is barely spoken and discussed.

2. Guidance lecture on “Legal provisions for issues of college girls”.

India is badly affected by ragging, a form of abuse on newcomers to educational institutes. Ragging has reportedly caused atleast 30-31 deaths in the last four years. Ragging involves serious abuses and clear violation of human rights. In 2009, UGC passed UGC regulation on curbing the menace of ragging in higher educational institutions, 2009. In many colleges ragging has been strictly banned, however, this ban has not been very effective as seen by the huge number of ragging cases still reported by the media. Even there are number of cases of sexual harassment.

Even sexual comments about a person’s physical appearance, even sexually offensive written or electronic messages, emails, offensive telephone calls or jokes or comments forms the behavior of sexual harassment element. To create the awareness about these matters guidance lecture on “Legal provisions for issues of college girls” was organized on 27th September, 2011. Advocate Sapna Khobragade practicing at Bombay High Court gave valuable guidance on use of Right to Information Act and various legal acts to protect the girls from such kind of abuse.

3. Seminar on “Women Empowerment: New dimension and new challenges”.

There have been significant advances for Women in many parts of our country in relation to health, education and employment over the past decade. However, the persistent and increasing incidence of violence against women, the underrepresentation of women in decision-making in all areas and at all levels and the fact that women continue to be disproportionately affected by discriminatory laws governing marriage, land, property and inheritance is unacceptable in this millennium. In addition, new challenges for women’s empowerment and gender equality have emerged over the past decade.

Even in areas where progress has been made, still there is much room for improvement. The role of women has changes drastically; the role of typical “grihani” (housewife) who catered to all the requirements of the household has been changed. The continuity of change in socio-economic and psycho-cultural aspects of human living has influenced the role of women. With the process of industrialization, modernization and globalization showing its deep impact on society all over the world, the role and responsibilities of women has attained new dimensions, definition and perspective. Seminar on “Women Empowerment: New dimension and new challenges” on 30th November, 2011 jointly organized by Women Development Cell and Department of Political Science on the occasion of constitution day and death anniversary of Founder of Women Education, Mahatma Phule. DCP Rashmi Karandikar, Thane, Mumbai Police and Dr. Kranti Jejurikar, Coordinator, WDC, University of Mumbai were the chief guest of honors. The guests were felicitated by offering a frame of preamble of Indian Constitution besides shawl, coconut and bouquet. Mrs. Kalpanatai Mhatre was also felicitated on this occasion on her election as Chairperson, Standing Committee, Mira Bhayander Mahanagar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Seminar highlighted the major problems faced by women in Indian Society like dropout rate, feticide, save girl child.

DCP Rashmi Karandikar put forth her experience how a girl can carry out the role of a male successfully. There is a lot of difference between the status of girls in Mumbai and those from other rural areas. She anticipated the change in mentality of Indian Society. Dr. Kranti Jejurikar in her speech threw a flood of light on various issues of girl students. Both the eminent personalities responded the queries asked by the audience in a very satisfactory manner. All the students were benefitted intellectually by the programme. Career guidance was also given to the young students.

Women development cell is committed to organize more and more initiative and such programmes to create social awareness about the problems of women and in particular regarding gender discrimination.
