Vasundhara Nature Club

The department of Environmental Studies runs a nature club, the primary objective of which is to involve students in activities that lead just not towards awareness but also sensitization of them towards environmental issues. This year the club organized a nature trail cum trek to Kanheri Caves in Sanjay Gandhi National Park on Sunday, 17th July 2011. Being located in one of the most populated city in the world, the park is one of the most visited one. Around 25 students who participated in the trail were introduced to the amazing biodiversity that the national park has and the underlying beautiful ecological processes that support this rich diversity. In the light showers of rain students enjoyed being close to nature. We walked till top of Kanheri hills to visit very ancient Buddhist Caves, popularly known as “Kanheri Caves”. Carved out of Basaltic rocks, the caves showcase excellent rain water harvesting systems developed by Bhudhhist people for whom the caves were a very big center for learning. We visited nature information center center in the national park.

In second semester on 25th January, 2012 the club organized another tour along with N.S.S. volunteers to the serene hills of Lonavala and Khandala which is a part of Western Ghats (one of the biodiversity hot-spots of India). We visited the famous Ekvira temple and the Karla Caves which is next to the temple. We spent some time at Bhushi Dam (which is a part of eco-sensitive zone) and Khanadala Ghats before coming back to Mumbai.
In the first week of February, 2012, the Department organized an hour long sessions on Remote Sensing and GIS where the students were given presentations on these topics along with a demonstration of tools like Google Earth and Google Maps which are useful in more than one way in our day to day life. Students participated in great numbers to learn the same.

We carried out plantations on 15th February, 2011 in the campus and planted various species to make our campus greener. We screened a BBC documentary “The private life of plants” on 17th February 2012 for the students of F.Y.B.Com. In the years to come the department will work with greater enthusiasm and dedication to achieve what has been said by the great scientist Albert Einstein “Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.”
